About this Concert

South Florida Symphony opens the 22nd season with both symphony and song. Samuel Barber’s “lyric rhapsody” for orchestra and soprano, Knoxville: Summer of 1915, reflects on a child’s summer evening spent with family in Tennessee. This dreamy work, based on one of the great pieces of American poetry of the same name, is performed regularly all over the world. Similarly, Gustav Mahler takes us back to a world of purity and naivety in his wondrous Symphony No. 4. These two 20th century masterpieces.

Filled with nostalgia and childlike innocence – feature soprano Brandie Sutton, returning to the SFSO stage following her breakthrough performance as Bess in Porgy and Bess last season. To kick off our Beethoven 250th Anniversary season is his powerful Egmont Overture, commissioned as the opening of Goethe’s tragic play. The story of Dutch nobleman Count Egmont’s life and heroism, who was condemned to death for taking a stand against political oppression, is expressed boldly through this sonata.
